Hypothesis: Jared is experiencing identity disruption as a result of being in what is essentially a new culture for him (middle-class, White, educated U.S. culture in contrast to rural, working-poor, ethnically bound, traditional U.S. culture).

Hypothesis: Because concepts of manhood fluctuate based on ethnicity and class, Jared’s concept of his gender identity and what it means to be a male is being questioned, and this causes distress. He is experiencing gender-role conflict.

He does not know what to talk about with the other people in his residence hall, and he is afraid that he might say something about which he will be teased.
